Haha, in one of our DiSCOVER workshops this past Saturday, we learned Chinese calligraphy. A friendly Chinese lady who practises calligraphy full-time presented a PowerPoint slide to us to introduce us to the basics and history of Chinese calligraphy. At the end of class, we each got to practise our calligraphy skills with the infamous stinky black ink and calligraphy brushes. We also participated in a friendly contest where we wrote calligraphy against each other to see whose writing was the best. The top 5 in a class of about 20 people were picked out. Mine was called out first of the five which must mean my penmanship was the best of the class. Hahaha *end brag*.
It was a lot of fun. I hadn’t done calligraphy since elementary school. We used the white piece of paper to practice writing Chinese characters out first. They’re not straight forward for the average person because you have to write each stroke in order– top to bottom, and left to right. I had done tons of these as a kid so these were a cake walk for me. Oops, did I say the bragging stopped. It didn’t. 😀
Here’s my winning parchment! 🙂
The winners each took home a calligraphy brush.
