My First Month Using the Flashfood app to Save Food and Money

I started using the Flashfood app in June 2023.  Flashfood is a mobile app where you get massive savings on fresh food items like meat and produce that are nearing their best before date at grocery stores across Canada and the U.S.  You save groceries from supermarkets for half of the price!

I originally downloaded this app a while ago (maybe a year or two ago) but quickly uninstalled it because I wasn’t able to see any postings of things that I wanted to get.  Ever since learning that you have to be patient and diligent with using food waste apps (like Too Good To Go), I was able to score more and more hauls on Flashfood as well.

Here are my Flashfood hauls in June of 2023:

Listro’s No Frills.  Mixed Produce Box $5.

Contents:  1 eggplant, 7 English cucumbers, 8 apples, 4 tangerines, 6 lemons.

Verdict:  All produce were really good and good to eat!

26 assorted vegetables and fruits

26 assorted vegetables and fruits for $5

Vi’s No Frills Scarborough.  Mixed Produce Box $7.

Contents:  13 chayotes, 5 cucumbers, 21 oranges.

Verdict:  All super fresh and blown away with how much we received in this box.  The box was so heavy when I picked it up!

26 assorted vegetables and fruits

26 assorted vegetables and fruits for $7

Loblaws Richmond Hill.  Pickerel Fillets $7.18 (original price: $14.37)

Verdict:  Good quality fish.  “Fresh to Frozen” seafood or meat means that they have frozen the product prior to its best before date.  Once thawed, it needs to be cooked within 24 hours.

Pickerel Fillets

$7.18

Chocolate Milk $0.94 (original price: $5.29).

Verdict:  I hadn’t drunk chocolate milk in a while and having it again was such a nice treat.  It was so fresh and smooth.

Chocolate Milk

$0.94

Fruit Box $5.

Contents:  28 lemons, 27 limes, 2 tangerines.

Verdict:  Amazing quality citrus fruits.  I looked up how to preserve lemons and limes and the best way is to store them in water in the fridge!

57 citrus fruits

57 citrus fruits for $5

Baby Spinach $2.49 (original price: $4.99).  Green Beans $1.99 (original price: $3.99).

Verdict:  The green beans were moldy!  I e-mailed Flashfood’s customer service and they refunded me the money.

greens

$4.18 for both

Veggie Box $3.

Contents:  3 bags of shanghai bok choy, 1 bag of baby bok choy.

Verdict:  Not very fresh but incredibly cheap for $3.  We picked out the wilted leaves and salvaged the rest to eat.  Still a great deal.

4 bags of bok choy

4 bags of bok choy for $3

Superstore Dufferin & Steeles.  Goat Milk 2% $2.39 (original price: $4.79).  50-50 Blend $2.99 (original price: $5.99).  Greek Pasta Salad $3.50+tax (original price: $7).  Plain 2% M.F. Greek Yogurt $2.14 (original price: $4.29).

Verdict:  So nice to get something different like goat milk for the family to try and drink.  The Greek pasta feta salad was new to me as well.  It felt really nice to rescue the small cartons of milk from going to waste.

 Groceries for $13

$13.18 for all

1% Partly Skimmed Milk $1.24 (original price: $4.49).  Yop coconut flavour $0.24 (original price: $1.79).  Romaine Hearts, 3 pack $2.49 (original price $4.99).

Verdict:  The Yop drinks were so great to guzzle down in the car between running errands on a hot summer day — and only 24 cents a bottle made us want to buy more than one with no hesitation.

 Groceries for $4.45

$4.45 for all

Fruit Box $5.

Contents:  8 packs of raspberries, 1 pack of strawberries.

Verdict:  SO, so fresh!  I couldn’t believe that they gave out this box full of raspberries!  I loved eating them.  (I was also really lucky and scored this box immediately when I saw it on the app.)

 raspberries for $5

2,497 grams/5.5 lbs of berries for $5

Fruit Box $5.

Contents:  12 Kent mangoes.

Verdict:  Fantastic deal and very juicy and fresh.  My mom is a big fan of mangoes and these were perfect for her.  She wished we would have been able to get another box but we don’t live close to this No Frills to have bought another case.

 12 mangoes in a case

12 mangos for $4.99

Loblaws Richmond Hill.  Cauliflower $2.49 (original price: $4.99).  Lemonade $0.74 (original price: $2.49).

 Greek meatballs

$8.48 for both

Carlos’ No Frills North York (Yonge St).  TruTaste 1% Milk $1 (original price: $4.88).

Verdict.  My goodness, $1 for this entire bag of 4L milk!  Good job to this location of No Frills for the know-how of lowering the cost of items according to how close they are to the best before date.  The milk tasted completely fine.

 4L of milk for $1

$1

Loblaws Richmond Hill.  French Beans $2.49 (original price: $4.99).  Coconut Milk Yogurt Vanilla $0.64 (original price: $4.49).

Verdict:  Good beans.  My first time trying coconut yogurt and it was very unsatisfying.  I will never buy it again.  I’d rather buy actual yogurt made from cow’s milk!

 green beans and yogurt

$3.13 for both

Super pleased and happy with all of our Flashfood purchases! ^_^  We have been buying our milks through Flashfood exclusively as of June because they have been readily available and taste as fresh as getting them at regular price.

You can only get these deals by installing the Flashfood app on your smartphone.  Check the app often for deals and encourage your local grocery store to join Flashfood if they haven’t already! 🙂

(Here’s my personal Flashfood referral code: KARE4PEFC.  If your first purchase is over $10, you’ll get $5 off!  Use the code when you sign up or on the Rewards tab.  Download the app today at https://flashfood.onelink.me/yAxk/referral)

I spent $110.85 for my first month of using the Flashfood app.
