My surprise bag hauls in March 2024

Rescue unsold food from being wasted.  Spend less than ten dollars on a surprise bag from a restaurant, convenience store, or grocery store on the Too Good To Go app.  I purchased these across Markham, Scarborough, Richmond Hill, Whitby, North York this month.

(Where there is a clear price tag of the goods, surprise bags that meet or are above the minimum value are marked with a green checkmark and surprise bags that do not meet the minimum value are marked with a red X.  E.g. If a surprise bag costs $7.99, the minimum value of goods received should be $24 worth.)

The 11 surprise bags I got in March 2024:

March 6:

Boreal Gateau & Creamery $4.99 surprise bag

• Pastries:  $4.99 plus tax = $5.64
• Contents:  4 ice cream buns.
• Wow!  What a pleasant surprise to get 4 ice cream buns from this fancy ice cream shop.
• The lavender ice cream was so rich and fragrant!

March 10:

Mochi Doh $6.99 surprise bag

• Mochi Doh (Kennedy Rd.)

• Pick up time:  5:30 to 6 p.m.
• Baked Goods:  $6.99 plus tax = $7.90
• Contents:  18 mochi puffs ($15.50), 1 mochi donut ($4.50).  Total value:  $20. ❌
• So very disappointed with this bag!  I was finally for once in the area near Mochi Doh to catch their bag come up on the app to collect it.  I couldn’t believe they just had mochi puffs and one mochi donut in the box.  Other people’s TGTG hauls include 5 to 6 donuts.  I’ve had Mochi Doh’s fresh mochi donuts before; they are delicious.  This disappointment in the surprise bag ruined it for me.
• There were 6 surprise bags available and I was the first one to pick up.  Instead of giving me the box on the top of the pile, I saw the store clerk shuffle through the boxes on the counter before giving one to me.  Was she shuffling to give me a good box or a bad box?
• Despite the initial disappointment, I do have to say that their mochi puffs and mochi donuts are very delicious.  The matcha mochi donut was so rich in matcha that I couldn’t sleep that night; I only ate 2 sections of it and it kept me up until 4 a.m.! 😓

March 11:

• Happy to get a straight dairy bag! All items have a BB date of March 18.

March 14:

Cafe Mozaiko $7.99 surprise bag

• Pick up time:  6 to 7 p.m.
• Contents:  12 Aburi Shrimp Oshi Sushi, 4 Salmon Tofu pocket sushi.
• This was such a great surprise and so tasty!!  Definitely will get again.

• Contents:  6 handrolls (salmon belly $4.95, jumbo salmon $3.95, seaweed salad $1.95, salmon ikura $3.95 x3).  Total value:  $22.70. ❌
• The surprise bags from here used to be $5.99 or $6.99.  It’s a surprise to see it now at $7.99 and an unfortunate surprise now that it doesn’t add up to value either.  It was really nice to get the salmon ikura rolls this time; they were delicious and had the popping roe in it.  Fresh end-of-day rolls as usual.

March 18:

• Felt very lucky to catch their bag again especially because I was on the lookout for it.  First time trying their soup which was great.  The tomato soup reminded me of the Japanese vending machine soups.  The salmon teriyaki is so full of flavour compared to the raw salmon makis where I have to put soy sauce and wasabi in it for more flavour.  I think this was our first time getting the California roll too.

March 25:

Metro $6.99 surprise bag

• Didn’t expect to get the giant tray of pumpernickel bread with the spinach parmesan dip, but it was so tasty and the first time I’ve gotten this from a surprise bag.  A lot of arugula stuffed in one box.

March 28:

Better Bread Bakery $7.99 surprise bag

• What an amazing haul!  All of the bread took up my entire kitchen table space to photograph.  The barbari bread was very fresh and the almond cookies were very good too.
