Last Friday night, we had a mommy-daughter date at Miss Qu Barbecue & Restaurant (曲小姐江湖菜烧烤酒馆). I spotted this restaurant the last time that the husband and I had date night in this plaza. Miss Qu Barbecue & Restaurant is a new restaurant to grace the restaurant scene at Commerce Gate and its brightly lit interior illuminating out onto the parking lot beckoned me to take a closer look by mentally securing it as a spot on my “to try” list.
I barely looked at what the menu was about before we went inside and got a table for two. At 5:45 p.m. on a Friday night, we easily secured a table. By 6:30 though, I’d say that the line-ups were beginning and people were waiting for a table near the front so make sure you arrive early because this spot gets packed.
The servers speak Mandarin and you order via the QR code at the table. My mom wanted a physical copy of the menu though and the server was able to provide one to us. There were lots of authentic Sichuan dishes and BBQ items to choose from. There was also fried rice and udon but no noodle soups.
We ordered two mains and four types of BBQ items to share.
The first item, Stir-Fried Baby Bok Choy, was much bigger than I expected and the first veggie dish for our otherwise all-meat (and carb) meal. The baby bok choy was stir fried in some type of pork oil with bits of the pork fat embedded into the dish. It was so tasty because of all the pork grease. I would recommend this dish!
The Fresh Pepper Spicy Chicken, already ordered with the option of “little spice”, was so fiery and hot! If you can’t take the heat, do not order this dish with any spice. It was a big plate of peppers, melon, and diced-up chicken. What I didn’t like was the chicken pieces were small and contained a lot of bones in it. I wish it had more chicken meat than bones to pick through. The flavour was intense and very authentic, no doubt about it. It was also a very large portion. We didn’t finish all of it and packed the leftovers home.
Our skewers started to arrive and when they did, the servers placed them onto the tabletop warmer (it had a candle under it and some parchment paper). This was neat. The table on our right didn’t receive such a tabletop warmer as I suspect it was a first-come-first-serve thing and once our table ordered the skewers and used it, they didn’t have one. The table to our left-hand side (which was a table of 4) had one though.
The best skewer of the night was the Bamboo Skewered Fish (3 pieces for $8.99). I normally love eating this type of fish anyway because when it’s fried, you can eat the bones (so good for getting calcium). For all of the protein skewers, I ordered it with a mild spice option. This bamboo skewered fish was so tasty, crispy, and fried such that you could indeed all of the bones. Too bad there were only three pieces of it!
The Salt-Baked Chicken Gizzard (4 skewers for $6.99) was all right, unfortunately. The gizzards itself were more tough to chew through than expected and the salt-baked flavour wasn’t strong enough to make it tasty. I thought that I had chosen a mild spice option to this item too. It probably would have tasted better with some spice to it.
The Beef Skewer (4 skewers for $8.99) was pretty good too. It’s what you would expect; meaty and tender with some spice to it.
The Milk-Flavored Bread Slice (2 slices for $4.99) was a definite winner. It’s a toasted piece of milk bread that is so warm, soft, and provides a nice break from the spicy meats. It was skewered on long wooden picks and fun to eat from. I definitely recommend ordering this to eat with skewers.
This was such a unique and fun restaurant to try out. I haven’t had this type of BBQ skewered food before. They have many BBQ options to choose from and lots of authentic meat dishes with spice in it. During the meal, I did wish that they had some sort of soupy noodle option to go with the food to balance out the spice and protein. It’s a great spot for friends to hang out or a small family meal (if you love spice).
They offered 10% off the bill if you pay in cash.
