On the Flashfood app, you can buy discounted food that’s about to near its “best before” date from supermarkets across Toronto and the states. I have loved using this app religiously since June 2023 to purchase groceries for my family and saving money. We have also tried a lot of new products we wouldn’t normally buy.
It is tragic that on April 11, 2024, Flashfood sent out an e-mail detailing its new Terms of Use which includes a new service fee coming into effect on April 26, 2024. It will be 5% of the total, with a maximum of $2.99 regardless of the order size. This means that if I buy a $5 produce box, it will now cost $5.25 going forward. This sucks.
I mean if this new cost means that we will be getting more and new supermarkets on board, then I will be happy with it. Otherwise, if we still only have stores like No Frills and Loblaws and Superstore with no new stores adding to the roster, why are we making it more expensive to use? Flashfood has existed for 10 years in Toronto and yet now when I am starting to using it religiously, a new fee is slapped on. So, so unfortunate.
They also will be adding a dispute resolution and arbitration provision as a way to help us sort out any potential issues or disagreements more smoothly.
(Update: Hmm, I’ve been buying items after April 26 and I don’t see any 5% fee added yet. Yay!?)
My referral code: KARE4PEFC. When your first purchase is over $10, then we’ll both get $5 in rewards!
Here’s what I picked up in April 2024 (total $322.86):
April 1:
Superstore (Dufferin/Steeles):
- Deluxe Bean Salad $7.50 (original price: $15).
This was a huge portion. It tasted very vinegary with lots of beans (kidney, black, long beans), tomatoes, green peppers, onions, and corn.
April 2:
No Frills (Yonge/16th):
- Whole Halal chicken $6.50 (original price: $13),
- Chicken thighs $4 (original price: $8).
April 3:
Loblaws (Richmond Hill):
- Veggie Box (4 lettuce) $5.
- Cauliflower $1 (original price: $4.99).
April 4:
No Frills (Yonge/16th):
- Atlantic salmon fillet $7.02 (original price: $14.04),
- Atlantic salmon fillet $6.87 (original price: $13.74),
- Chicken drumsticks $5.06 (original price: $10.12),
- Pork loin chops $4.88 (original price: $9.77).
First time seeing fresh salmon fillets from this No Frills. We cooked them for dinner that night and it was so fresh and delicious!
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Blueberry banana yogurt smoothie $0.24 (original price: $1.49) x4.
Nabbed these quickly before anyone else got to it lol. Originally wanted to get 3 to leave one for other people, but my finger must have slipped and I put 4 in my cart haha.
No Frills (Warden/Hwy 7):
- 500g unsalted cashews $3.50 (original price: $7.49) x2.
Great deal for cashews! Our family already finished one tub before the BB date of April 11.
April 10:
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Faroe Island salmon $5.78 (original price: $11.56).
Finally see fish again at this location! I think we are all starving of fish and want to see more of the fish surplus!
April 11:
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Fruit Box (6 packs of organic strawberries) $5.
Unfortunately, one pack had all moldy strawberries and we threw it away. The other packs were fine with edible strawberries. Great grab!
April 22:
Superstore (Dufferin/Steeles):
- Couscous with tomato salad $7.44 (original price: $14.89),
- 2L of 1% buttermilk $1.94 (original price: $5.39),
- Atlantic salmon steak $4.67 (original price: $9.34) x2,
- Strawberry fruit on the bottom yogurt $1.24 (original price: $3.99),
- Atlantic salmon fillets $3.75 (original price: $7.51),
- Arctic char fillet $3.74 (original price: $7.48).
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Fruit Box (22 bananas) $3.
- Veggie Box (8 packs of organic mushrooms) $5.
The mushroom was very good and fresh! Wish I had gotten another box.
- Mixed Produce Box (152 okras) $5.
- Veggie Box (cassavas and yams) $5.
- Drinkable yogurt $1.94 (original price: $4.99),
- 2% strawberry banana yogurt $1.24 (original price: $4.49),
- Chicken drumsticks $4.50 (original price: $9).
My child loved these yogurts.
April 23:
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Arugula $1 (original price: $3.99),
- Baby Arugula spinach blend $1 (original price: $3.99),
- Mussels $1.94 (original price: $7.99).
The arugula were not very good. We had to pick a lot of them out.
The mussels were also not that great this time around.
- Veggie Box (4 packs of lettuce) $5.
- Romaine lettuce hearts $2.
Really fresh and crunchy lettuce! Loved these.
- Fruit Box (4 packs of mandarin oranges) $5.
There were 4 packs of mandarin oranges in there, but I gave one pack to my friend; that’s why there are only 3 in the photo.
April 24:
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Mixed Produce Box (3 packs of Savorries tomatoes, 1 pack of baby cucumbers) $5
No Frills (Yonge/16th):
- Ground chicken $4 (original price: $8)
- Sliced pork belly $4.19 (original price: $8.39)
April 25:
Wholesale Club Richmond Hill:
- 4L of 1% milk $2.94 (original price: $5.89).
Grateful for my friend who swung by this store to pick this up for me too.
April 25:
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Vanilla yogurt with protein $0.44 (original price: $4.49),
- Vanilla yogurt with probiotics $0.64 (original price: $5.99).
- Veggie Box (3 packs of 3lb carrots) $5.
Wonderful carrots.
- Fruit Box (16 hass avocados) $2.
These avocados were giant and so perfectly ripe. They were so creamy and delicious! Best avocados I’ve had in a long time.
April 26:
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Arctic char fillet $5.43 (original price: $10.86),
- Arctic char fillet $5.77 (original price: $11.54),
- Atlantic salmon fillet $8.65 (original price: $17.31),
- Atlantic salmon fillet $6.63 (original price: $13.26),
- Plain salmon portion $2.83 (original price: $5.65),
- Atlantic salmon fillet, club pack $10.40 (original price: $20.80).
Is it “selfish” of me to buy up all this salmon when I saw it uploaded? I’m paying for it though so it’s not like it’s for free… I hadn’t seen frozen fish from this store in a while!
April 27:
No Frills Stouffville:
- Camembert cheese $3.49 (original price: $6.99),
- Oven roasted ham, cashew, and cheese $1.24 (original price: $2.49).
Superstore (Dufferin/Steeles):
- Garlic Bread $1 (original price: $4.99),
- Multigrain Salad $4.53 (original price: $9.06),
- Boneless pork chops $2.57 (original price: $5.14),
- Firm tofu $0.99 (original price: $3.49).
The multigrain salad was sweet and tangy; really nice to try and share for dinner!
No Frills (Yonge/Steeles):
- Chicken breasts with asparagus and cheese $5.49 (original price: $10.99).
I can’t believe this small portion of stuffed chicken is $11 retail! Glad we got to try it for half price. It’s tasty but not a big portion.
April 28:
No Frills (Kennedy/Sheppard):
- Goat marble cheddar cheese $4.75 (original price: $9.50),
- Lunch Mate hot dogs lunch kit $0.50 (original price: $3.49) x5.
Saw these lunch kits for 50 cents each so I decided to get 2 — one for me to try and one for my child, but then my husband wanted to get 5 so 5 we got. It’s so cheap! And I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a lunch kit either; first time trying!
April 29:
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Atlantic salmon trimmings $6.99 (original price: $13.98).
First time getting salmon trimmings on the app.
- Fruit Box (9 bags of Heritage Thompson grapes) $4.
Wow!!! I couldn’t believe my eyes to see 9 bags of grapes in the brown bag. They were all mostly fresh and plump too! These grapes are so sweet and truly are like “mother nature’s candy”.
- Mixed Produce Box (1 pack of mixiany cherry tomatoes, 1 bag of organic lemons, 2 packs of raspberries, 2 packs of sugar bomb tomatoes, 1 pack of mini cucumbers, 3-pack English cucumbers) $4.
Wow, what an assortment of goods! And all I saw in the photo on Flashfood was the cucumbers with a peek of raspberries poking out. What a great surprise. I love the person who put this brown bag together! ^_^
- Veggie Box (3 cauliflowers) $4.
- Veggie Box (2 packs of romaine hearts lettuce, 1 bag of clementines, 1 bag of blood oranges) $4.
Didn’t expect the citrus fruits underneath the two bags of romaine lettuce. Great deal!
- Fruit Box (18 bananas) $4.
Not a good deal of bananas for once. (There should be more bananas for this price.)
- Fruit Box (5 tubs of Wholly Guacamole, 1 tub of Loblaws store guacamole, 1 bottle of kombucha) $4.
Wow!!! What a treasure trove of guac! Love the bottle of kombucha that they threw in there too. (The guacs had a BB date of April 27 but that’s to be expected given the steep discount of this box.)
Also, remember the time I bought these Wholly Guacamole from the same store for $2.49 each and said they were luxury items? Can’t believe I got this bag for $4 which included 5 of them!
- Mixed Produce Box (8 containers of blackberries) $4.
Wow, 8 containers of blackberries for $4?! This is so cheap!
- Fruit Box (3 dragon fruits, 10 tomatoes) $4.
First time seeing dragon fruit on the app! Also, the tomatoes were so plump and fresh.
No Frills Stouffville:
- Stuffed chicken breast with mushroom risotto $5 (original price: $10).
- Greek Pork Kebab $5 (original price: $10),
- BBQ Chicken Kebab $5 (original price: $10),
- Mediterranean chicken drums $5 (original price: $10).
This was a delicious already-marinated set of meats. I originally only purchased the stuffed chicken breasts but since no one else seemed to be buying them, the husband and I picked 3 more packs to try. At the end of the night, I noticed no one else bought the meats on the app. It’s such a shame that all of this meat is going to the dumpsters… 😦
No Frills (Markham Rd/16th):
- 10lbs of yellow onions $2.77 (original price: $10.99).
- Bavarian Rye Bread $1.24 (original price: $3.99).
April 30:
No Frills (Warden/Hwy 7):
- Skin-on chicken legs $5 (original price: $10),
- Pork sausages $3.99 (original price: $7.99).
- Skin-on chicken legs $5 (original price: $10) x2.
The husband went back to the store after the first purchase of chicken legs and pork sausages to get the last 2 packs of chicken legs because we didn’t want to see them go to waste (and the price is good and the chicken legs for dinner were fresh and delicious). It’s so upsetting to see so much good food go to waste. Why can’t more people know about and use this amazing app?!?
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Faroe Island salmon $5.27 (original price: $10.55),
- Atlantic salmon fillet $3.92 (original price: $7.85).
- Fruit Box (5 bags of organic Mission Produce avocados) $3.
Such a great box to snag!
No Frills (Yonge/16th):
- Meat lover’s pizza $2.50 (original price: $5),
- Lean ground pork, club pack $4.73 (original price: $9.47).
First time trying the meat lover’s mini pizza and it was really yummy!
