Flashfood is the best app for saving money. It’s a free app where you can buy items that are nearing their “sell by” date for 50% off or more of their original price.
At the end of this month, Flashfood unveiled their final stage of their rebranding which was a brand new interface for their app. I was actually invited to try out this 3.0 version weeks before the public’s release (because I am a frequent user of the app). I tried it out and gave them feedback about what I didn’t like in hopes that they will change it.
The feature I like so far include showing each store’s newest items on the “preview” part of the store so that I don’t always have to click into it to see if there are new items added (it used to be a rotating picture carousel of all the items they have so I’d have to click into the store to see what the newest items were).
I don’t like that they separate all of the orders now from the same store so that I can’t screenshot all of the things I have to pick up in one picture when sending it to my husband or friend for pickup. It’s inconvenient to have to send individual screenshots. I understand why they are doing it this way though; it’s because they’ve eliminated the side panel for retrieving the store receipts. They wanted to streamline the interface.
I don’t like that I always have to click “Search this area” to see my stores come up. The app is slower in this way and takes more time to use than before.
Hopefully over time, they will fix these issues so that Flashfood resumes the app which was so easy and simple to use.

This month, I spent $310.59 on Flashfood purchases.
October 1:
Tufts Your Independent Grocer:
- Baby diapers, size newborn, 76 count $9.94 (original price: $29.99). Paid $10.50 after 5% service fee and tax.
First time seeing diapers at Tufts on Flashfood! What an amazing deal for diapers!! (I actually watched them slash the price when they realized no one was going to buy it at the 50% they originally set it for.)
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Mixed Produce Box (5 fuzzy melons) $2. Paid $2.11 after 5% service fee and tax.
- Mixed Produce Box (6 boxes of strawberries from Crystal Cove) $3. Paid $3.17.
This is a different brand of strawberries than the ones we’ve got from Loblaws in the last little while. They’re more tart and sour but looked great and were fresh.
October 2:
Vi’s No Frills (Steeles/Silver Star):
- Mixed Produce Box (67 bananas, 6 Asian pears) $6. Paid $6.34.
Yay! Finally seeing bananas on the Flashfood app again. My usual Loblaws hasn’t been uploading bananas the past week and we are fresh out of them. I saw this huge box of bananas for $6 and just had to get it. My kids are banana lovers!
- Bear Paws Veggie and Fruits Oatmeal cookies $1.75 (original price: $3.49) x2. Paid $3.70.
So nice to see this on the app because it’s perfect for my kids to snack on!
October 3:
Rob’s No Frills (Warden/16th):
- With Gusto hamburger buns $1.50 (original price: $2.99). Paid $1.59.

Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- 4-pack of 0% vanilla Greek yogurt $1.89 (original price: $3.79) x3. Paid $5.98.
- Mixed Produce Box (3 bags of romaine hearts lettuce) $3. Paid $3.17.
October 8:
Carlos No Frills (Yonge/Steeles):
- Select marinated herb and garlic shrimp $3.99 (original price: $7.99). Paid $4.22.
I was curious about this product and wanted to try it. It tasted like the marinated shrimps you eat at restaurant salads. It was decent; a bit sour from the marination but very firm. A bit overpriced though for the portion (only 250ml); I’m glad I didn’t tell my friend about it.
October 9:
Rob’s No Frills (Warden/16th):
- Multigrain Miche Sliced $2.39 (original price: $4.79),
- Hot Cross Buns Extra Raisins $1.75 (original price: $3.49),
- Savory Butter Rolls $2.24 (original price: $4.49).
- Paid $6.74 for three items.
Trying new items like the hot cross buns and extra raisins and savoury butter rolls thanks to Flashfood. ^_^
October 11:
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Mixed Produce Box (10 boxes of raspberries) $3. Paid $3.16.
So many of the raspberries were moldy. 😦 They should have assembled this produce box at least 2 days prior.
- Mixed Produce Box (8 boxes of raspberries, 2 boxes of strawberries) $30.03. Paid $31.73.
I accidentally bought this produce box without thinking (because 1, I saw strawberries on the top and 2, I wanted to buy it before other people got to it) and didn’t realize the price of the produce box was incorrectly labelled as “$30.03” as opposed to their usual $3 price. I e-mailed Flashfood to refund me the difference, but they ended up refunding me the entire price of $31.73 — just as well because so many of the raspberries were moldy and we threw them out. They just weren’t edible and I was actually contemplating asking for a refund for just the $3.17 too.
October 11:
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Mixed Produce Box (3 small pumpkins) $3. Paid $3.17.
First time seeing small pumpkins on Flashfood. What a smart idea too because every year for Halloween, every supermarket has many pumpkins for sale but I’m sure that 90% or so don’t even make it to the consumer’s home. Flashfood is the best solution for this. I bought it so that my kids can carve it this year! ^_^
- Mixed Produce Box (3 boxes of organic whole white mushrooms) $3. Paid $3.17.
- Mixed Produce Box (5 dragonfruits, 1 orange) $3. Paid $3.17.
- Mixed Produce Box (3 bags of grapes) $3. Paid $3.17.
October 12:
Real Canadian Superstore (Dufferin/Steeles):
- Fried tortilla chips $2.50 (original price: $5),
- Pork chops $6.57 (original price: $13.13),
- Rigatoni marinara with meatballs $4.50 (original price: $9),
- Ground chicken $4 (original price: $8),
- 1.5L of 3.25% lactose free ultra-filtered milk $3.30 (original price: $6.59).
- Paid $22.06 for five items.
The staff couldn’t find the $13.13 pork chop package so they gave me one that was $13.02 instead. 🤷♀️ You win some, you lose some.
October 15:
Rob’s No Frills (Warden/16th):
- Naan original flatbreads, 10 pack $2.50 (original price: $5),
- Thick Slice bread $1.50 (original price: $2.99).
- Paid $4.24 for two items.
I originally picked and bought the whole wheat version of the thick slices bread but at pickup, the item was past the BB date (Oct 11), so the associate gave me the white bread version instead. 🤷♀️
Enzo’s No Frills (Yonge/16th):
- Halal chicken drumsticks $4.50 (original price: $9) x2,
- Skinless halal chicken thighs $6 (original price: $12).
- Paid $15.85 for three items.
We were running low on chicken from our freezer stock so I jumped to buy these when I saw them on Flashfood. ^_^
October 16:
Peter & Suzi’s No Frills (Markham Rd/Hwy 7):
- Chicken drumsticks $3 (original price: $6),
- Chicken drumsticks $3.02 (original price: $6.03).
- Paid $6.36 for two items.
These chicken drumsticks were so big and meaty! Such a great deal. Kind of wish I bought more than 2 packs haha.
October 18:
Girards No Frills Welland:
- Halal chicken drumsticks $4.50 (original price: $9) x2,
- Atlantic salmon steak $7.33 (original price: $14.66),
- Atlantic salmon steak $6.64 (original price: $13.29),
- Atlantic salmon steak $6.98 (original price: $13.96),
- Cooked turkey breast slices $1.75 (original price: $3.50),
- Smoked kolbassa style $1.75 (original price: $3.50).
- Paid $35.34 for seven items.
Two of the salmon steaks’ prices don’t correspond to what we paid for. At the store, the clerk consulted the manager for help on this and they ended up giving us what they had on hand. The difference in price is minuscule; us receiving about a few cents more than what the listed price is on the package.
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Atlantic salmon fillets $6.70 (original price: $13.41),
- Atlantic salmon trimmings $2.63 (original price: $5.27),
- Atlantic salmon trimmings $3.02 (original price: $6.03),
- Icelandic cod fillets $4.82 (original price: $9.63),
- Organic Atlantic salmon $6.79 (original price: $13.58),
- Icelandic cod fillets $4.23 (original price: $8.46).
- Paid $29.78 for six items.

October 21:
David’s No Frills Cobourg:
- Ivory snow baby liquid laundry detergent $8.99 (original price: $9.99). Paid $9.50.
Superstore Ajax:
- Tenderloin grilling steak $9 (original price: $20.10),
- Amazing grain bread $0.48 (original price: $3.99),
- Cheese roll $0.48 (original price: $4),
- Seabream (orata) $4.50 (original price: $9) x2.
- Paid $20.04 for five items.
I couldn’t help but buy the cheese roll at 48 cents a bag; so cheap! The fish was actually what caught my eye first because we’ve bought seabream from Superstore before and it was very tasty. The husband chose the tenderloin steak and I’m glad he did because the meat was so tender and delicious.
October 22:
Loblaws Richmond Hill:
- Mixed Produce Box (4 bags of 2lb mandarin oranges) $3. Paid $3.17.
- Mixed Produce Box (2 boxes of roma tomatoes, 1 box of Axiany cherry tomatoes) $3. Paid $3.17.
- Mixed Produce Box (3 boxes of 2lb strawberries) $3. Paid $3.17.
- 1L of organic 3.25% milk $1.94 (original price: $4.69). Paid $2.05.
October 23:
Vi’s No Frills (Silver Star/Steeles):
- Mixed Produce Box (4 bags of yu choy, 1 bag of boy choy, 3 garlic) $4.22.
I actually split this produce box with my friend. It was $8 (or $8.45 after fees) for 8 bags of yu choy, 2 bags of bok choy, and 2 bags of garlic.

- Paid $11.33 for three items.
- Mixed Produce Box (18 bananas) $3. Paid $3.17.
- Mixed Produce Box (15 oranges, 9 mandarins) $3. Paid $3.17.
October 25:
Carlos No Frills (Yonge/Steeles):
- 2L of 3.25% milk $3 (original price: $6.99),
- Unsweetened almond beverage $1 (original price: $3.99).
- Paid $4.23 for two items.
October 30:
Vi’s No Frills (Silver Star/Steeles):
- Mixed Produce Box (1 hairy melon, 16 carrots, 1 bag of onions, 2 packs of bok choy, 24 garlic) $6. Paid $6.34.
- Mixed Produce Box (35 apples). Paid $3.70.
This box of 72 apples was actually $7 ($7.40 after fees) (two of them were rotten). I split it evenly with my friend. There’s no way our household would have been able to finish 70 apples comfortably.
