If you want to buy cheap groceries, try this app called Flashfood.  They’re discounted because the goods are nearing their “best before” dates, but BB dates are actually just a recommendation and you should rely on your five senses to see if something is fit for consuming.  We have saved so much money each month from using this app to buy our regular groceries.

Use my referral code KARE4PEFC  to get $5 off your first purchase of $7+.

Here is my monthly blog post recapping what we bought.  This month, we spent $378.64.

  • Portion snack, medium cheese $3.49 (original price: $6.99)
  • Lactose-free mozzarella cheese strings, $3.50 (original price: $7).
    • Paid $17.73 for four items.

Saw the cheese and snagged it right away because they were sold out immediately afterwards.

 oranges and mandarins

oranges and mandarins for $5.28

  • Mixed Produce Box (2lb-bag of mandarins, 9 loose oranges, 3lb-bag of mandarins) $5.  Paid $5.28.
 apples and 1 pear

23 fruits for $5.28

  • Mixed Produce Box (22 apples, 1 d’anjou pear) $5.  Paid $5.28.

Lots of spots and dents on the apples. 😦  Poorer quality than usual for a Loblaws produce box.

June 3, 2025:

Enzo’s No Frills:

3 whole chickens

3 whole chickens for $23.78

  • Whole chicken $7.50 (original price: $15) x3.
    • Paid $23.78 for three items.

Where are all the chicken drumsticks and thighs that I used to see often?  All I see these days are whole chickens from Flashfood.  Oh, well.  Stocking up anyway because we always eat chicken.

June 4, 2025:

Wholesale Club (10909 Yonge St, Richmond Hill, ON):

 Creamy vanilla yogurt

2kg of yogurt for $7.12

  • 2kg of creamy vanilla yogurt $6.74 (original price: $13.49).  Paid $7.12.

Hashim’s No Frills (681 Silver Star Blvd, Scarborough, ON):

 bananas and mangoes

57 fruits for $5.28

  • Fruit Box (49 bananas, 8 mangoes) $5.  Paid $5.28.

Forty-nine bananas is a good number.  Last time’s 67 was way too many!

June 5, 2025:

Rob’s No Frills (8601 Warden Ave., Markham, ON):

 baked goods

3 items for $5.68

  • Mini brioches $1.74 (original price: $3.49),
  • 100% whole wheat hamburger buns $1.50 (original price: $3),
  • 10-inch chipotle tortillas $2.14 (original price: $4.29).
    • Paid $5.68 for three items.

These baked goods are not as cheap as the ones from VanSpall’s but paying half price for them is still better than no discount at all.

The kids loved eating the mini brioches.   The hamburger buns are still perfect for the vegan burgers we got from the Healthy Planet surprise bag.

June 6, 2025:

Jim’s No Frills (10909 Yonge St, Richmond Hill, ON):

5 packs of chicken for $18.49

  • Bone-in chicken thighs $3.50 (original price: $10).
    • Paid $18.49 for five items.

Finally stocked up on some chicken!! 🙌  I was lucky to get these for cheaper than normal too; at $3.50 a pack is a very good price!

Enzo’s No Frills:

fresh Atlantic salmon portion

$4.23 for fresh Atlantic salmon portion

  • Fresh Atlantic salmon portion $4 (original price: $8).  Paid $4.23.

Swung by Enzo’s just to get these because I didn’t want them to go to waste… 🙈

Tufts’ Your Independent Grocer (3259 Bayview Ave, North York, ON):

 carrots, parsnips, lettuce

All these vegetables for $5.28

  • Veggie Box (3 bunches of carrots, 2 parsnips, 3 heads of lettuce) $5.  Paid $5.28.

I believe this is the first time we bought and cooked parsnips at home!  This is not a vegetable we regularly buy but after eating it and reading about the nutritional benefits, it should be something we should buy and eat more of! ^_^

Also the first time we got a produce box from Tuft’s!  And it won’t be the last.

 Neilson buttermilk

1L of buttermilk for $1.52

  • 1L of 1% buttermilk $1.44 (original price: $4.62).  Paid $1.52.

The first time I tried buttermilk was from a dairy surprise bag at Longo’s.  Buttermilk is actually so good for you and has more calcium than cow’s milk!  It is easily digestible too.

Loblaws Richmond Hill:

 Product of Mexico raspberries

8 packs of raspberries for $3.17

  • Mixed Produce Box (8 packs of raspberries) $3.  Paid $3.17.

These raspberries were so fresh and none of them had any mold!  Best of all is the price. 😊 Loblaws is finally bringing back their $3 produce boxes!!

quarter seedless watermelon

$1.92 for a quarter seedless watermelon

Perfect to enjoy immediately on a hot day.  We cut it up in the car and shared it all to eat. ☺️  Also my first time buying something from Nature’s Emporium via Flashfood.

 raspberry turmeric elixir

5 items for $65.83

  • Moonshine Mama’s raspberry turmeric elixir, 500ml $12.49 (original price: $24.99) x5.  Paid $65.83.

We recently received these turmeric elixirs in the surprise bag at Healthy Planet and I believe it really helped with the throat irritation that I had.  Plus, turmeric is supposed to be really good for you too.  Thus, when I browsed the Flashfood shops in Oakville and saw it, we bought all five of the bottles that they had.

  • Fruit Box (6 oranges, 1 pear, 15 apples) $2.  Paid $2.11.

Mostly good quality with some dented apples.

 no frills fruit box

20 fruits for $1.59

  • Fruit Box (4 oranges, 16 apples) $1.50.  Paid $1.59.

The price reflects the quality as some apples were wrinkled.

Chicken thighs for $4.23

  • Bone-in skin-on chicken thighs $4 (original price: $8).  Paid $4.23.

Loblaws McCowan:

Enzo’s No Frills:

 Prime Canadian chicken drumsticks

3 packs of drumsticks for $14.27

  • Chicken drumsticks $4.50 (original price: $9) x3.  Paid $14.27 for three items.

Pricier chicken drumsticks per weight but these are grain-fed chicken, so I guess it is worth it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

June 19:

  • Rhubarb strawberry pie $3.75 (original price: $7.50),
  • Traditional naan rounds $2 (original price: $4),
  • Cheese croissants $2.50 (original price: $5).
    • Paid $8.72 for three items.

Trying this brand of cheese croissants for the first time since we finished the last pack of croissants so quickly.  That rhubarb strawberry pie was delicious!!  Not too sweet and a bit tart.

Great deal here too and lots of variety (random to get 1 apple and 1 orange, for example).  The bananas were a tad mushy.  The variety pack tomatoes had been picked through previously.  The chayote was moldy and we threw it out.

My mom bought a small portion of cherries the other day from No Frills for $3.60.  My kids ate them in the matter of a day and a half.  Thus, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity when I saw all these cherries for $7 plus other bonus fruits.

  • Canned pink salmon, Wild Pacific $2.75 (original price: $5.50) x10.
