Ajisen Ramen (Hong Kong)

Located inside the Hong Kong International Airport

Everyone knows about Ajisen Ramen.  It’s one of the first ramen places that popped up in Toronto before the ramen craze began.  Before that, it’s always been a global franchise that has shown off its ramen and tendon pork ribs broth in many countries around the world.  It is based from Japan.  It just so happened that we dined at Ajisen Ramen right after we came back from our Spain and Portugal trip (individual blog posts about that trip to come later! 😀 ).  They have one located right inside the Hong Kong International Airport and I was in the mood for some ramen right after our trip.  Hehe.

Their Hong Kong menu is a little different from the Toronto one.  For some reason, I was feeling for some spicy ramen and in both of our orders, the broth was quite spicy!!  The orders came as a set so we got to choose a side dish order as well.  Yay!

Pork and Kimchi Ramen

The pork and kimchi ramen sounded SUPER appetizing and appealing to me, and despite the name, it just didn’t quite go through to my head about how spicy it could be.  It was yummy; the kimchi was great and the pork wasn’t bad.  I liked the texture of the ramen as it was a little soft and wavy and different from the one in the Toronto restaurants.  Unfortunately, because it was made from kimchi, the broth was spicy.

The other ramen we had was the Beef Ramen in Tomato Soup.  This wasn’t spicy but the soup was very akin to the first one.  The beef was good!

Baked Scallop with Butter

The two side orders that we had were the Baked Scallop with Butter and Japanese Deep Fried Chicken.  The scallops sounded like a big potential in taste buds but it was actually a little disappointing.  The scallops were small and weren’t very fresh.

The fried Japanese chicken, or karaage, wasn’t that great either.  It was a little plain in flavour and way over fried to a crisp.  Too hard and dry. 😦

Japanese Deep Fried Chicken

So, all in all, as you can tell, that meal was just okay.  I wish I had chosen something that was a bit more simple in terms of broth and not spicy so I could drink it all and taste it more.  Hehe.

We actually returned to the very same Ajisen Ramen a couple of weeks later to have dinner just before we took off for Korea.  This time, I ordered the standard ramen that most people go for — the pork ramen :D.  My mom had the veggie option.  We also had side dishes this time that came with our ramen: a corn crab salad and Japanese fried tofu.

The pork ramen was just as I liked it.  Fatty slices of pork in a white broth made with tendon pork ribs with an egg.  Yum!  Nice and simple.  My mom’s was all vegetables like corn, green onion, cabbage, and black fungus with ramen.

The corn crab salad was just okay.  There was a sprinkling of fish roe too that was very crunchy and popped in your mouth when you bit it.  There was Japanese mayonnaise as well.

I actually really liked the fried tofu!  It doesn’t look that great in the picture but it was fried so that the outer skin was a little crispy on the ouside and extremely soft and smooth on the inside.  Yum!  The pieces swam in a light soy soup.

Ajisen is not considered top ramen but they do have so many locations around the world.  🙂  Have you been to one before?  If so, what was your impression of their ramen and soup broth?
