Weekly Photo Challenge: Ornate

Kaohsiung, Taiwan. March 2013

I think this is such a great example of what “ornate” means.  This week’s theme is really great and makes us think again about the objects around us that we may overlook — let’s have more of these themes instead of these ones. 🙂

This photo was taken in March of 2013 when my mom and I were travelling in Taiwan.  One of the stops on the tour was to Fo Guang Shan (佛光山) literally meaning “Buddha’s Light Mountain” and the Buddha Memorial Center that celebrates and honours everything Buddhism.  This amazing sculpture sat in front of one of the building entrances and was carved from a block of wood and represents hundreds of monks settled around a woodsy landscape with the biggest Buddha perched on the top.  So many people were taking turns taking photos in front of it (I got one too).  This must have taken thousands of hours to carve and what a testament to the human mind, patience, and skill this is!

It’s truly a beautiful work of art!

I love carved art like this, one time I saw an Asian galleon carved out of wood 4 feet across and up, I wanted to take it home! 🙂
