Comfort Food Classics at Marathon Cafe Richmond Hill

Marathon Cafe located at 155 East Beaver Creek Rd. unit #26 in Richmond Hill

I first blogged about Marathon Cafe in Richmond Hill in July 2015, but I figure this place needs an updated blog post from me.

I was craving for something simple and comfort food-like and which wouldn’t take a long time for the food to arrive.  It’s been tough to dine out with the two kiddos these days because the 1 year old likes to walk around soon after eating and we just need a place that is no frills and fast.

Marathon Cafe has an online order sheet, but I found it easier to look at their paper menu in-person.  When we arrived at 11 a.m. on a Saturday, it was actually quite packed.  We were lucky to get a table for the five of us near the door as well as a high chair for the youngest.  It’s so no frills there that there were still dirty plates on the table and no one came to clean it yet.  The hubs moved the plates over to another table while we settled in.

You get their paper menu at the counter and place your order and pay there.  Then when your order is ready, the staff will bring it out and announce it.  You’ll have to wave your hand to let them know where you’re seated for them to bring it to you.  They will serve you utensils and extra bowls if you need them.

We got “the best combo” which was $14.90 for a bowl of satay beef instant noodles (you can substitute the instant noodles with vermicelli egg noodle, fresh rice noodle, udon, or rice noodle too), an egg sandwich, and a cold Hong Kong milk tea.  Such a great deal!

They have a Chef’s Special Combo for $11 where you can mix and match your choice of noodles with a meat.  This was a bowl of rice noodle with pork chop and a drink.

I got the Pork Chop Bun combo ($9) which came with a drink.  The pork chop bun was so delicious.  It had little bit of lettuce and mayonnaise in it too.  The pork chop was so juicy and tender!

I also got the Pineapple Bun with Sliced Butter ($5.50).  This is a classic Hong Kong style item that I don’t think I’ve really had before.  The pineapple bun was super warm and soft while the butter was cold and salty.  It was a great combination and so tasty (I was craving lots of carbs this morning).

Street style siu mai

Fish Dumplings $6.50

I also tried their Fish Dumplings (dim sum style) or “street style siu mai” in Cantonese ($6.50).  It came in a dish of five dumplings with soy sauce already on it.  These were pretty good.  It had a good chew to it and reminded me of the fish siu mai from Yan’s Wok at First Markham Place.  Those are actual fresh fish siu mai though whereas these are more on the “street style” type.  They were still good and the size was on the bigger size.

When we left at around 12:30 p.m., there was another flow of customers and a couple was waiting for our table already.

Service is quick and friendly for the most part.  They’re famous for their Hong Kong style milk tea and have won numerous awards for it!  They offer free wifi (still).
