February 24, 2019: Here goes a really long and detailed blog post about my experience visiting Hue Spa Detox Clinic for the first time. I was staying in the North York area and planned to get a massage for the next day. Thus, on the night before, I went on Groupon to search up massage deals for nearby massage parlours. I noticed that Hue Spa Detox Clinic was nearby and called them to see if they had availability for me before I purchased the Groupon. I called at 9:30 p.m. on a Saturday night. The information about Hue Spa Detox Clinic shown on the Groupon page said that they would close at 10 p.m., so I was hoping that they would still pick up my call at 9:30 p.m.
After a few rings, a female answered my call. I asked if it was possible for me to come in the following day for a massage. The female said yes and asked me to come in at 11 a.m., of which I was absolutely fine with. Before hanging up, I felt it was a bit weird that she didn’t take down my name or my cell phone number. I asked her about this and she said it was fine and for me to just come in the next day. I hung up and left it at that even though I knew from booking at many massage parlours before that they almost always take down my info in order to book me a spot.
Perhaps it was this weird vibe I got because I got there promptly before they opened at 11 a.m. the next day to make sure I was one of the first ones there.
Hue Spa Detox Clinic is housed in a cute little yellow house (with a small parking lot at the back). It faces Finch Avenue and is literally just a few minutes’ walking from Finch subway station.
I arrived in the little house, took off my shoes at the entrance, and put on one of the slippers that they had there for guests. It was a quaint and nicely decorated space. I approached the female staff at the reception desk and informed her that I was there for the 11 a.m. 60-minute massage appointment and that I had a Groupon voucher for it. I told her that I had called to make the appointment the previous night at 9:30 p.m. She asked me for my name and telephone number and attempted to look for it on her computer (but also mentioned that their computer system was broken), so she switched to looking up something on her phone. I again explained that when I called the previous evening, the person on the phone hadn’t taken down my info. She then asked me for the Groupon voucher number, and I provided it to her.
She gave me a laminated instruction sheet that detailed what the procedure would be for the 60 minutes detox massage and taxes weren’t included yet and that the tip was based on the original price of the massage and not what I had paid for on Groupon. I wanted to pay the taxes then and there but she instructed me to do that afterwards since she had some other things to explain to me later. That was fine.
After I read it, I gave the sheet back to her and she asked me to wait in the waiting room. During this exchange of conversation, there were three other guests who also arrived for a 11 a.m. appointment.
I visited the ladies’ room first and then sat in the waiting room with the others. Soon, one by one, the massage therapists all came out to call their customers to follow them into their respective massage rooms. I kind of knew something was up when I was the only one left in the room and no one came to call me after everyone else was called. I waited a minute more before heading back to the reception desk to inquire about it.
I told the female staff how I was one of the very first to arrive and yet still hadn’t been called yet. It was already past 11:05 a.m. by that point as well. The female staff was visibly flustered and knew something was wrong too. It seemed that all the massage therapists already had taken their clients in so it was quite odd that there was still a customer (me) waiting for a massage.
She again asked for my name and telephone number. I became quite irritated at this point because I had already given her my information when I first arrived and she even took down my Groupon number. I had assumed that this meant that my appointment was already validated and acknowledged. She asked me when I had called in to make the appointment and I told her again that I had called the previous evening at 9:30 p.m. to make the call. It was only at that point that she told me they were closed by 8 p.m. the previous night and that no one was in the office. What the…. It felt like something surreal out of a movie because it clearly didn’t make sense. (Also, that means that the business hours information on the Groupon site is incorrect.)
I told her that when I called the number, someone indeed had picked up claiming to be their spa and told me to come in for an 11 a.m. appointment. She was insistent and said that it wasn’t possible because their office wasn’t open at that time. On my end, I was also insistent about this because I clearly had called and someone had answered my call!
This was getting nowhere as we were both telling the truth and didn’t know what was going on. She asked me to take a seat while she called someone and spoke to them frantically in Korean over the phone.
When she hung up, she asked me what number I had called. I told her I had called their business number. I pulled up my cell phone to look at the call log and showed her. It was when she looked at it that she told me that their business number was 416-229-0007 and not 416-299-0007. OMG. So it turned out that I had actually transposed the last two digits of the first three numbers when dialling! What the heck. But then why did someone pick up my call claiming to be the spa? The female staff member suggested that perhaps I had been the victim of a prank. I couldn’t believe it. We were both in disbelief because clearly it wasn’t an experience they had had with their clinic before either.
I asked her if there were any other massage therapists available to take me in and she said they were all full at the moment. I was so devastated and appalled that this had happened. Whoever owns that number, 416-299-0007, and played that cruel prank on me deserves the same karma back to them at some point in time. What a cruel, sick joke that caused me to waste my time! Ugh.
I had to wait for my fiancé to pick me up since the initial plan was that he would pick me up when my 60-minute massage was over. Honestly, what a waste of time this was and the worst part was that my phone was low on battery and I had forgotten to bring my cable charger. I wasn’t even able to make use of the time by either surfing or blogging on my phone to pass the time. What a waste of time. In this day and age, no one can afford to waste time anymore. There is always something on my to-do list to accomplish. I felt so helpless just sitting there waiting for the time to pass.
Anyway, in between this waiting time, the female receptionist really did feel bad for me and suggested that I reschedule the massage to another time or day. She initially suggested 1:30 p.m. or 2 p.m., but I said that I would have to first see if my fiancé was okay with dropping me off again at that time. She kept receiving calls from customers who wanted to come in on that day too and she actually told them that they were full. I felt bad for her too even though she had a kind heart and wanted to help me reserve a spot in case I was able to redeem my massage that day. I ultimately told her to book her customers first because I didn’t want her to hold out on me in case I didn’t end up redeeming the massage on that day.
When I finally got in touch with my fiancé, it turned out that a 12 p.m. massage spot had opened and he was able to come get me at 1 p.m. It worked out perfectly at that point. Phew!
After this was confirmed, I returned to wait in the waiting room for the massage therapist to get me. Again, I was paranoid that the first incident would happen again where they make a mistake or neglect to bring me in as a customer, but luckily that was just me being over-worried. A massage therapist with a name that started with a “R” took me to the second floor of the house for my massage.
The room was a typical massage room with a massage bed in it. There was a small basket where I could place my belongings and hooks on the wall to hang my jacket and clothes. There was some soothing music playing out of a boombox in the room. She gave me some time to prepare before she returned again to begin the massage.
She provided some aroma oils for me to smell and unwind for the massage. She asked me if there were any problem areas I wanted to focus on or if I had any injuries. She also asked me if the pressure she was using was okay for me or not. She was very professional. I really enjoyed the full massage!
First, she started off with a massage of the back and then massaged with hot oil. The hot oil was so relaxing against the skin. She also used hot stones for my back massage too! It was so, so relaxing! The heat from the hot stones really helped to soothe away any tension I had.

She also moved on to the arms and legs which were very effective. It was so relaxing. I was very impressed with her service! She also used a hot towel at the end to help me wipe off the excess oils. I left the room feeling very relaxed and invigorated.
When I paid the taxes and tip, I also made sure to thank the female receptionist profusely for helping me secure an appointment after all that day. I was grateful that I ended up getting a massage that day.
Although I felt like I was wrongfully pranked for scheduling a massage that was supposed to be confirmed, I actually realized that without that playful prankster’s joke, I actually would never have bought that Groupon to begin with. If I had indeed called the correct number of the spa, they indeed would have been closed and wouldn’t have been able to pick up my call, and thus, I wouldn’t have bought the Groupon. Technically, I should be thankful that that “prank” happened in order for me to even have a massage to enjoy that day. At least that is the way I’m viewing it.
What a funny twist to this experience, but I guess sometimes things really do happen for a reason. No matter what though, I wonder who it was I talked to that night who pretended she was a spa receptionist?! I also definitely have learned my lesson to double check and triple check a phone number before calling and definitely not accept an appointment at face value if the person on the phone doesn’t even take down my information for it!
All in all, I would recommend Hue Spa. Their service is definitely professional and top-notch. They have several massage therapists too. The female receptionist also offered me a one-time special deal if I were to return back for more massages, but since I am not often in the North York area, I didn’t think it was convenient for me to return often. Otherwise, if you are in the North York area, this is definitely a great spa to try!
