Pandemic 2020 Takeout Eats: Sam’s Congee Delight

I’ve blogged about this restaurant before, but to give to him a shoutout again and to reflect one of the restaurants that we bought takeout from during the pandemic, here it is.  Sam’s Congee Delight (7354 Woodbine Ave., Markham) is one of my favourite restaurants because of the affordability of food, great taste, and comfort food level.  I have been here so many times since they relocated from the Market Village location two years ago with family or friends and definitely a handful of times by myself too (which are the ultimate “me time” outings).

For Mother’s Day, I decided to order takeout from Sam’s Congee Delight for a comforting and easy brunch.  We browsed their website which was so easy-to-use to browse the items available for takeout, called them, placed our order effortlessly, and were told that it would be ready in about 30 minutes.  The lady on the other end of the line took our name and phone number.

When we arrived and parked, we called first to make sure that our order was ready before heading inside the restaurant.  It was a fast and efficient pick-up and within moments we were driving back home to enjoy our meal.

We ordered all of our favourites 😋, which turned out into a fantastic Chinese comfort food feast with leftovers too.

This was so good, but all of the Styrofoam and plastic containers are so bad for the environment

My favourite congee has to be the Minced Beef one.  We also ordered the Pork Liver congee and classic Shredded Pork with Preserved Egg congee.

Three types of congee

We had three types of rice noodles:  plain, BBQ pork, and fried dough stick.  The plain rice noodle is always smooth and perfectly complemented with the sweet sauce and peanut butter sauce, but on this visit the fried dough stick rice noodle stuck out and hit the spot.

We ordered a fried dough stick and Sweet Crueller as well for the congee and a Sesame Seed Ball.  This was my first time trying the Sesame Seed Ball from them and it was good.

Fried dough stick, fried noodles, sweet crueller, sesame seed ball, fish balls, plain rice noodles

For additional snacks, we ordered the Fried Noodles with Bean Sprouts (classic item to go with the congee), Sticky Rice Dumpling with Soy Sauce, and Fish Balls in Curry Sauce.  I was so impressed with their curry sauce!  It was a perfect curry sauce that was bright yellow in colour, not too spicy, but not mild either.  This item also hit the spot. 😋

We also ordered a dessert, cold Mung Bean pudding.

Again, these were all great-tasting items with so many of my favourites in one place too.  It was so satisfying and definitely not something you can make in one sitting at home. 🙂

During the pandemic, this was the statement released by Sam’s Congee Delight on their Facebook page regarding their pick-up only service and hours:

“Sam’s Congee remains open for business from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm.  We have temporarily closed our seating areas and offer a ‘to-go only’ option.  We are taking orders via these numbers: 905-479-1074 and 416-898-3898 for pick-up at our restaurant.  Alternatively, delivery is available through UberEats and Fantuan Delivery.”

Have you been to Sam’s Congee before? They have the best comfort food HK style congee and rice noodles in my opinion.

I have! But I live soooo far, so I don’t really go there because it takes too long. But back then, I went there a few times when I was in market village! I miss it 😭😭
