The Good Son Restaurant at Shops on Don Mills

The Good Son Restaurant dinner menu and prices

The Good Son Restaurant located at 11 Karl Fraser Rd in North York

February 9, 2020:  After watching the Harley Quinn movie (the last movie we watched in theatres before the COVID-19 lockdown hit) for our long-awaited double date, we decided on The Good Son Restaurant (11 Karl Fraser Rd) just around the corner at Shops on Don Mills for dinner.  I had never been to this restaurant before (they actually have two other locations in Toronto) and good thing we didn’t need to make a reservation when stepping inside at around 6:15 p.m. on a Sunday evening.

The interior of the restaurant was dimly lit, so it was difficult to admire all of the detailed aesthetics on the walls and decor in general.  It had a homey and even romantic vibe with armchairs for some of the seats.

We were led to a four-person table and provided the menus and water for our table.  I only took three photos that evening.

Cheeseburger

Cheeseburger. $19
-American cheese, Russian dressing, hand-cut fries

The dinner menu had a range of western and Italian and seafood dishes like steak tartare, scallops, rapini, burrata, pastas, fish, and a whole section of pizzas.  There was definitely a lot to choose from, but not the most economic menu in terms of dining out.  In fact, three of us ordered from the pizza menu that night.  I actually was craving something meaty, so I chose the Cheeseburger.

The Cheeseburger came with American cheese, Russian dressing, and hand-cut fries on a round wooden platter (you can add Berkshire bacon for $4).  It was actually an amazingly tasty cheeseburger.  The beef patty was so moist and juicy but a little raw (I actually told the server I wanted it fully cooked, but I guess this instruction was missed…).  The hand-cut fries were a little dry for my taste unfortunately.

Mauna Loa pizza

Mauna Loa. $21
-smoked pork cheek, roasted pineapple, scotch bonnet

Ken ordered the Mauna Loa pizza, which consisted of smoked pork cheek, roasted pineapple, and scotch bonnet.  Their pizzas are inventive since you don’t see smoked pork cheeks often as an ingredient.  The pizza was pretty good.  The portion of the pizzas were plentiful and generous too.  The three of us who ordered pizzas all asked for a takeaway box for the remaining slices too.  (I also packed the rest of my fries to go.)

All in all, it was nice to try The Good Son Restaurant.  I think it is a fitting restaurant for a special night out.  You’ll want to splurge on the finer items on the menu to fully enjoy the dining experience.
