All You Can Eat Dinner at Yummy Sushi in Richmond Hill

May 18, 2019:  We decided to go for an all-you-can-eat sushi dinner on a whim.  I wanted to eat a variety of tapas, particularly more vegetables, and it seemed an achievable goal with a Japanese style all-you-can-eat restaurant.

We looked up local AYCE restaurants and Yummy Sushi stood out in having one of the cheaper dinner options — $27.99 for an adult for dinner.  I called to make a reservation to say we would be there in 10 minutes, but the person on the phone didn’t even take my name before hanging up.  I guess they knew they weren’t really busy and thus a reservation wasn’t necessary for them.

We were lucky to nab the last booth seats

We arrived at the restaurant and luckily took the very last booth seat.  There was an iPad ordering system, and the menu contained numerous items of sushi, rolls, special rolls, handrolls, rice, ramen, udon, sashimi, teppanyaki items, salads, and more.  I was quite impressed with some of the items since they were more unique than other restaurants.

The food came out in a reasonable amount of time, and everything that we ordered came (except for one, but after we followed up with it, the Butter Mushrooms came out timely).

The lower price point of the dinner AYCE was really obvious.  Most of the items were of the lower grade quality but still tasty.  What I mean is that the Pan Fried Mixed Vegetables dish consisted mostly of bean sprouts, tiny broccoli florets, and skinny slivers of red peppers and zucchini.  Bean sprouts is such a cheap “vegetable”.  When I ordered the Vegetable Soup, the same ingredients in the pan fried veggies dish were in the soup.  It was definitely a way for them to cut corners on their dishes.

I liked how the iPad stood up on its own

Secondly, a lot of the items pictured in the photos on the iPad didn’t look like the dish that arrived on our table.  I know the table next to us actually asked the server about this, and I overheard the server responding with “the photos are for reference only.”  I understand that, but it’s misleading to have the menu photos look so gorgeous when the dish that is served looks completely different (in a bad way).

Nevertheless, Yummy Sushi is definitely a very affordable AYCE sushi restaurant.  Just come with low expectations and you’ll be okay.  If you want the authentic good stuff, you’re better off going to another restaurant.

With that said, I did like the taste of the torched salmon sushi, Deep-Fried Tofu (it was so soft!), Avocado Salad (the avocado was perfectly ripe and so smooth), the Enoki Beef Roll, Edamame, and the Spider Roll (it was so tasty).  The Fruit Roll was also interesting and made with mango, banana, and peach.

Their sushi pizza was tiny and small (you might be able to eat it in one bite).  It was cute.

The Seaweed Salad was so-so, and the Teriyaki Chicken was made with the cheaper cuts of the chicken.
