June 9, 2020: You know it’s going to be an affirmative answer when your other half asks you, “Do you want to get shawarmas for lunch?” 😀 We both haven’t had shawarmas in a while and the idea of a meaty saucy handheld wrap for lunch was definitely something I wanted to eat that day.
A quick look at the online menu at our nearest Osmow’s Mediterranean in Markham (8630 Woodbine Ave Unit 5,) and I had my choice picked. I wanted the beef shawarma. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that the restaurant now offers Beyond Meat shawarmas as well.
It didn’t take long for Ken to drive to the Osmow’s restaurant, order takeout, and bring it back home.
He got a Chicken Shawarma Poutine too in addition to chicken shawarma and beef shawarma wraps! ^_^
The Chicken Shawarma Poutine was hot and fresh and oh, so delicious! The finely carved chicken chunks were drizzled with Osmow’s famous sauce with gooey melted cheese curds and hot gravy on top of fries. The fries were soft and mushy actually which made it taste even better. I inhaled a large chunk of this poutine and even the photo shows the right-hand corner portion being dug into already.
I cut the Beef Shawarma Wrap in two to enjoy. There was finely carved beef sharwarma sauteed with tomatoes and onions served in a pita wrap with all of the the works, tzatziki, and Osmow’s famous sauce. While the wrap was beefy and delicious as well, I think whoever assembled the wrap went a little overboard with the sauces. There was too much sauce such that the pita wrap was drenched and soaked with sauce. It made the wrap difficult to hold up to eat.
I ate the other half of the Chicken Shawarma Wrap the next day and it was great too. By now, even if there were a flood of sauce in this one, the sauces had evaporated a little bit so I couldn’t tell if it was as drenched as the beef one was.
Osmow’s does a solid sharwarma wrap and an even better sharwarma poutine as I found out from this takeout order. However, I remember when I visited the Markham store last year and blogged about it, I commented in my blog post about how I wished they didn’t use Styrofoam in any of their takeout containers.
I remember receiving a response from the restaurant on social media informing me that they were going to overhaul their takeout containers and use something more environmental friendly very soon instead. However, seeing as the Chicken Shawarma Poutine was still carried out in a Styrofoam container on this day, I’m disappointed to learn that they did not follow through on their word. They haven’t moved toward earth friendly packaging yet even though they were fully aware of it having responded to my blog post more than a year ago. I hope they really consider using sustainable paper packaging ASAP. (Also, the takeout order was carried out in a plastic bag. They should switch to paper bags!)
