Sichuan Cuisine at Fish Legend

This is quickly going to become one of my favourite restaurants in the Markham area! 😀  After a Friday massage session, my mom and I headed over to Fish Legend (沸腾鱼乡 in Chinese) to check it out for lunch — we had had an appointment scheduled for this time actually but we ended up having some time before our stuff was ready… so in we walked into Fish Legend to check it out!  Fish Legend is right beside Aka Teppan and Ding Tai Fung at First Markham Place.  There are so many great restaurants in this area to check out! 😀

Fish Legend is a Chinese restaurant that specializes in Sichuan cuisine.  Upon walking into the restaurant, you could smell the spice in the air and I passed by three tables that all had ordered the well-known “boiled fish” in a big pot filled with lots of spice!  It was pretty exciting!

Looking at the menu, there was a lot to choose from — from hot and cold dishes to vegetables to food in griddles, to soup and drinks.  I actually walked into this restaurant hoping to eat a simple bowl of noodles but the menu focused more on main dishes that you can order to share.  I couldn’t wait at this moment to return again with more people so that we could try one of their larger menu items like the Signature Dishes of “boiling sliced fish” or “stone pot fish”.

We ended up ordering three things:  Griddle Cooked Rabbit, Spicy and Sour Noodle Soup, and the Pan Fried Supreme Chive Dumplings (one of my favs to order at these restaurants).

Service caller at the table

Service here was very friendly and efficient.  I loved how they had a “service caller” on the table that included many buttons; not just for calling for service.  It was the first time I’ve seen something like this!  You can press a button to either call for “service”, “order”, “water”, and even the “bill”!  It was so cool!  I tried pressing it and upon pressing the button, it actually announced my table number so that a server could come immediately for us.  It was so cool!

Spicy and Sour Noodle Soup. $6.99

The Spicy and Sour Noodle Soup arrived in vibrant colours.  Oh, and I forgot to mention from the start of this blog post that if you are a person that doesn’t like spice, you might as well stay away from this restaurant.  This restaurant caters to all and everything spicy!  There is not much on the menu that doesn’t call for a delicious spicy dish!  The Spicy and Sour Noodle Soup contained transparent vermicelli noodles with preserved vegetables, nuts, cabbage, and chili oil.  The type of spice that they used here is the “ma la” numbing spice type.  That means that after you slurp up some of the noodles, you will get a numbing sensation in your mouth.  It’s quite special!  After that, the spice doesn’t linger in your mouth — it’s a good type of spice!  (If you like that kind of thing.)

Griddle Cooked Rabbit. $13.99

The Griddle Cooked Rabbit arrived in a small wide wok that was placed on top of a mini stove that kept it warm through the the meal.  This dish was also clearly a Sichuan dish due to all of the hot red spicy chilis that were embedded into the dish.  There were chives, red peppers, onions, and green onions.  These actually tasted so crisp and sweet (the spice probably brought out the sweetness of the vegetables).  The pieces of rabbit were actually tender and very tasty!  It wasn’t just a spicy taste that covered the rabbit meat but you could taste the freshness of the meat in each bite.  I was actually very pleased with this dish and loved it after the first piece.

Pan Fried Supreme Chive Dumplings. $2.99

The Pan Fried Supreme Chive Dumplings only came in two pieces.  I’ve had these kinds of dumplings many, many times before and love them.  I found that Fish Legend made these with not enough chives inside.  Look at my picture and you’ll also agree that there weren’t enough chives inside.  The dough of the dumpling was also a bit thick so it felt like you were eating a lot of dough near the end.  Nevertheless, I’m glad that we ordered this small snack because it helped to balance out the spice from the other two dishes.

As you can tell, I was very pleased with the experience and service of Fish Legend.  There was so much selection on the menu that I couldn’t wait to come back again and try out more of their food.  I actually mean it that I’ll want to come back and try more.  Can’t wait! 😀
