Job shadowing Teresa Forbes

Today, I got to job shadow Teresa Forbes for the second time. She’s a realtime court reporter who has worked for many many years. The first time I heard of her was actually the very first day I also saw a steno machine demonstration and tried out one for the first time. It was at the Open House in March of 2009 at my court reporting school. I had called ahead of time for the 5 pm slot, and when I got there, I sat in a room to wait for the demonstration to start. I remember sitting there with other potential students and reading through the information package that they gave us. In this info package was also articles about successful court reporters, and in the featured article was Teresa Forbes. (This was the exact article I read. ) Who would have known that one day I’d get to job shadow her?   Continue reading

High Park Cherry Blossoms

This weekend I went to High Park to see cherry blossoms for the very first time!  I went with a group of friends, and since it was the second day that nearly all of the blossoms were out in bloom; it was a weekend; it was perfect 26 degree weather; and perfect sunny skies, the park was literally packed with people.  It was my first time at the park to see these blossoms.   Continue reading

Chinese Steno

In one of the steno groups on facebook that I belong to, one of the members mentioned that a stenograph in Chinese is called a 速录机.  I Googled this and this gave me a fantastic array of pictures of Chinese steno machines and stenographers.  So cool!

The set up is exactly like how a regular stenograph for English is.

My first time tree-planting!

On Saturday, April 27, the Mon Sheong/DiSCOVER group led us to tree planting!  This was part of a city-wide initiative to plant trees and there were so many volunteers there.  I was quite pleasantly surprised!

I’ve always wanted to plant trees!  The first time I wanted to plant trues was back in high school when I saw a poster in the hallways promoting a tree-planting day.   Continue reading

I have excellent penmanship

Haha, in one of our DiSCOVER workshops this past Saturday, we learned Chinese calligraphy. A friendly Chinese lady who practises calligraphy full-time presented a PowerPoint slide to us to introduce us to the basics and history of Chinese calligraphy. At the end of class, we each got to practise our calligraphy skills with the infamous stinky black ink and calligraphy brushes.  We also participated in a friendly contest where we wrote calligraphy against each other to see whose writing was the best. Cake

I made a funny today.  During the break time, one of the lawyers was eating a slice of cake from the kitchen and commented that the reporting agency had really good food.  I said, “So I guess this place takes the cake eh? Literally”.  She and two other lawyers and the court reporter all laughed at my joke.  Hehe, I’m funny. 🙂

So close

I know I’m going to be saying this a lot as I continue testing for speed tests in my journey towards the 225, but I was SO close.  I got back my test result for my LIT 160 wpm test and I got 2 measly errors over what is allowed to be counted as a passing grade.   Continue reading

Waiting for test grades!

I’m excited to say that for the first time in… months almost a year, I submitted a test after self-grading it!  In short, this means that I have a very good chance of passing it.  Yay!!!  *throws confetti into the air*.  I haven’t passed a test since I finished all of my university courses and was about to enter my practicum which was last May!  It’s taken me a full year — almost — to really buckle down and practice and get up to speed.  Of course, it’s because I’ve had to fulfill my obligations as a Phoenix Theory instructor during this time, but still, this is exciting.   Continue reading

Yunnan Rice Noodles

Dinner!  Yunnan rice noodles are done a little differently than most dishes.  First, they bring you the dish of raw, uncooked ingredients.  I stared at it, thinking it was edible because it was presented so nicely, but I was smartly informed that we had to wait until the steaming bowl of soup came first.  Steaming hot it did arrive.  The server dunked all of the raw ingredients into the hot soup, and then plopped the bowl of rice noodles on top of it.   Continue reading

Ways to alleviate test anxiety

A student of mine just sent me an e-mail to ask me how to combat her testing anxiety.  I offered the following e-mail and thought I would share with you here as well.  If you are a court reporting student or stenographer reading this and have some tips on calming yourself before a test, please share. =)

For anxiety, I started having test anxiety when I was testing in my 100s. I
was so nervous that my hands would start shaking. Continue reading
