DiSCOVER. Trip to China. Day 3. July 18, 2013.

Walking into the first building at Peking University

Second day of trip, or technically the third one as the first and second are considered one day due to the flight.

We visited Peking University today! Chantel, Jesica, and I did our presentation to the students there. I was surprised with how good their English was! Continue reading →

Short thoughts on NCRA Convention 2013

It’s 2 a.m. right now and there are two more seminars ‘tomorrow’ morning left on Sunday before the Convention is officially done. So far, I’ve had some drastic changes regarding my steno career path in the last 2 days. Continue reading →

DiSCOVER – Mon Sheong Youth Group Program

Wow, I just discovered that DiSCOVER has a flickr page that has albums upon albums of pictures from all the events that we’ve participated in in the last 6 months!  Way to go to whoever has been uploading all of these pictures; it must have taken quite a while!   Continue reading →

NOVA scienceNOW: Can I eat that?

The foodie and nerd in me popped its head out during the 13-hour flight to China with the DiSCOVER clan. Instead of watching a blockbuster movie provided during the in-flight service, I opted to watch a documentary instead. I love documentaries :D. This is one was, naturally, all about food. Haha. It’s a really neat production about how humans have evolved to eat cooked food (we’re the only animals to do so) — it’s because we can then digest them faster. The expert said that if food wasn’t cooked, humans would spend 5 hours each day just on chewing! Lol. Continue reading →

Summerlicious 2013 Restaurant #5: Bymark

I remember the very first time I went to a Summerlicious/Winterlicious restaurant when I was still a university student and combing through the menus to find the restaurants that offered prix fixe menus at the lowest end of the price ranges — either $15 for lunch or $25 for dinner.  I was on a student budget and didn’t want to spend that much money on food.  Plus, a $15 three-course lunch at a supposedly fine dining restaurant can be really worth it if you go to the right ones!  Continue reading →

Summerlicious 2013 Restaurant #4: The Rosedale Diner

There was a Spiderman figurine in the corner that watched everybody eat.

My friend suggested going to The Rosedale Diner after seeing it shown on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives on the Food Network.  Unfortunately, or fortunately, I don’t have this channel — I would probably be watching it 24/7 to scope out where the best eats are.  When we arrived at this place, it turned out to be a hole-in-the-wall kind of place.   Continue reading →

Almost done teaching at CCVS

My students are so awesome.  This is the last weekend before I leave for my trip on Tuesday and the last week where they have to submit their progress reports since I’m leaving.  Instead of choosing to be bitter about having to finish the course earlier than anticipated, they all wished me good luck and to have an amazing trip in China.  They’re so wonderful. 🙂 With that said, I have 16 dictation and test submissions (so far) to mark this weekend plus all (10) of their progress reports.   Continue reading →

Summerlicious 2013 Restaurant #3: Pan on the Danforth

Pan on the Danforth located at 516 Danforth Avenue in Toronto

The other Greek restaurant that I’ve been on the Danforth for a ‘licious event was several years ago at Ouzeri.  I remember the portions to be huge and the food was very authentically Greek.  Although a completely different restaurant, dining at Pan on the Danforth this time during Summerlicious 2013 was a similar experience.   Continue reading →

Summerlicious 2013 Restaurant #2: Lisbon by Night

Portuguese food has never tasted so good at Lisbon by Night.  I loved the fish soup that I started off with.  This restaurant is really well known for their fish dishes and when I ordered the fish soup, even the server’s smile told me that it was the right appetizer to pick.  It was warm and each spoonful was full of soft, shredded fish pieces.  The crunchy croutons gave the soup a nice kick.  The calamari that my friend ordered was very well done and flavoured.   Continue reading →
