Cajun-Creole Food at N’Awlins Jazz Bar and Restaurant

inside of N'Awlins Jazz Bar and Restaurant

N’Awlins Jazz Bar and Restaurant located at 299 King Street West in Toronto

This cozy spot in the entertainment district of downtown Toronto called N’Awlins Jazz Bar and Restaurant hosts an interesting menu of Cajun-Creole dining.  They have live performances every night except for Mondays.  Unfortunately, my friends and I had to leave before the music could be heard since we had to be at another function that night.   Continue reading

Mooncakes

Eating a mooncake slice by slice

It’s that time of the year again — Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!  Or as some like to say, Happy Mooncake Day!  It’s the time of year when Asians will celebrate the day the moon looks the biggest and brightest in the sky by eating big dinners with family around the table, when children light up their carefully chosen lanterns and play with them on the streets, and when mooncakes are eaten by the box full.  Actually, maybe not by the box since they’re a really sweet and fatty pastry, but you get the idea. 😉

Behind the Scenes at the Mon Sheong Telethon 2013

Mon Sheong Telethon 2013

The group picture we took at the end of the night. Can you spot where I’m sitting? 🙂

Last night, I had the opportunity to volunteer with the Mon Sheong Foundation at their annual telethon event.  Every year, Fairchild TV broadcasts a program that “enables the public to learn more about Mon Sheong’s efforts in long-term care services, community service and promotion of Chinese culture, as well as Mon Sheong’s future developments”.  It showcased ten resident stories as well as live interviews. Through the live TV program, all the volunteers sat in the back and answered the calls that came in through the donation hotline.

Afghan Food at Bamiyan Kabob

Tonight, I went with a friend to try out Bamiyan Kabob.  It is a popular place to eat Middle Eastern food as evidenced by both the current #2 restaurant ranking in the Markham area on Urbanspoon and also immediately when we stepped foot into the restaurant.   Continue reading

DiSCOVER. Trip to China. Day 4. July 19, 2013.

Being stuck in Beijing traffic for over an hour on the way to Tsinghua University

Today was so-so. To be honest, i’m looking forward to home already. Today wasn’t that fun.

First of all, we were turned down by Tsinghua University. Our tour bus had driven up to their gates and they wouldn’t let us into the campus (schools in China are very particular about security and thus will not let in non-registered visitors). Continue reading

A Favourite of Casual Cafe of Mine: City Hollywood Cafe

Each booth seat has a unique framed cartoon such as this one
Located at 4372 Steeles Avenue East in Markham

Every so often, I like to visit City Hollywood Cafe which is situated on the outside mall strip of Market Village in Markham.  This popular spot for having all-day breakfast, afternoon tea, happy hour, lunch, dinner, or whatever else is frequently populated by Asian families, youths, and the elderly. I’m moving!

Finally, after 4 full days of not sleeping in a full bed, no TV, sofa, dining table, computer desks, and your usual home furnishings, we’re moving!! It’s been such a stressful and difficult 14 or so days of packing up the last 18 years of my life into boxes or straight into the trash. Depending on how you look at it, one of the downsides of living in a two-storey house with a full basement is that because there is so much space, you end up storing and putting away a lot of stuff, that frankly, you will never use again. It’s natural to want to put things away for ‘later’ as we’re all (most of us at least) natural hoarders and want to save everything. Continue reading
