March 3 and 30, 2018: I’ve been to My Wonderful Kitchen before it was rebranded and renamed (only the Chinese name is new (米芝蓮); the English name of the restaurant remains the same). My relatives came here for dim sum last month and really enjoyed it, so much so that they came here twice in a row. On that visit, my mom also brought me back some leftovers which I enjoyed and thought was really good!
Thus, we went to My Wonderful Kitchen to check it out for ourselves too. We called ahead to make a reservation over the phone. When we arrived, we only had to wait a few minutes in order to receive our table. The restaurant was packed with people and there were so many people waiting in line to be called for a table. The restaurant was newly redone and looked so modern and classy. The dim sum was ordered through an order sheet with lots of selections and special chef dishes too. We ordered a number of the most classic dim sum like ha gow (shrimp dumpling), siu mai (pork and shrimp dumpling), pork ribs, chicken feet, and also some new items like mushroom tart and wasabi tuna roll. The food came quite quickly which I was impressed with.
I liked the dim sum! It was all very solid in taste.
Steamed Pork Dumpling (siu mai):
Steamed Shrimp Dumpling (har gow):
Steamed Spare Ribs with Taro:
Steamed Chicken Feet:
The Deep Fried Tuna Mini Roll with Wasabi Dressing were a bit overpriced since they were special items. However, it did taste good.
The Deep Fried Chicken Pastry with Mushroom, Cheese, and Cheese Sauce was good too.
We finished off our meal with a hot Silken Tofu Pudding. It was a bit cold near the bottom of the dish but not terrible.
March 30, 2018: A few weeks later, we returned again for more dim sum with our relatives. This time, despite having called in to make a reservation and because it was the Easter long weekend, we had to wait a very, very long time for a spot. We waited for almost 30 minutes.. One problem I have about My Wonderful Kitchen is that the managers/senior staff allow people to butt in line. If you have a personal relationship with the staff at the restaurant, they allow you seats first. This is unfair because all those people who fairly got a ticket to stand in line are now bumped way lower on the list.. I overheard a group of people who said they had waited 2 hours in line before they got a table. What… 😦
Anyway, on this visit it was funny because we coincidentally sat at the same table as last time. We ordered a few of the same items again but somehow the food didn’t taste as good as it did the last time.
Steamed Shrimp Dumpling (har gow):
The Steamed Snow Pea Leaves & Mushroom Dumpling were good but a bit bland for my uncle’s taste. I thought they were good; it’s just veggies so the blandness is acceptable:
Steamed Spare Ribs with Taro:
Congee with Dried Fish, Spare Rib, & Crunchy Peanuts:
Boiled Pig Trotters & Egg Ginger in Sweetened Vinegar:
Steamed Rice Rolls with Fried Dough:
I did like the Steamed Seafood Dumpling in Soup. It was very tasty.
We also tried the Deep Fried Milk Rolls that was excellent. I love eating shareable plates with others because you can sample a few bites and not have to finish the whole dish. This is definitely not something I would have wanted to eat too many pieces of despite its deliciousness.
The Barbecued Pork with Steamed Rice was good too. The cha siu (roasted pork) was soo tender and fatty, and thus very delicious.
We ordered a Baked Chicken Pastry with Curry Sauce this time. I took my time to savour the tart, and I realized it was full of a butter taste. They must have used to much butter in it! :O
I still like the food here and would come back. Their parking lot is small and definitely advise to make a reservation for dim sum if you come on a weekend. The reservation helps you get in line faster (although still expect to wait with a reservation in place).
