September 21, 2017: After the longest hike of my life (4 hours of 12 km!), we arrived back at our starting location and ate dinner at a dai pai dong called New Tung Kee Chinese Restaurant in Tung Chung (新東記大排檔) around 8:30 at night.
At first, we didn’t want to dine in because we noticed from walking inside for a second that there were people smoking in the restaurant. We didn’t want to dine in a place with billowing second-hand smoke. However, we also noticed after walking out that they had a separate room with no smokers and decided to dine in after all.
We had a simple dinner of just four dishes with rice and beer to share.
Dai pai dong dishes are so good, full of wok hay, and cheap! ❤
We ordered the Sauteed Squids with Water Spinach, Fried Fish Meat with Corn Sauce, Season Vegetable with Salted Egg & Fresh Eggs in Consomme, and Stir Fry Mixed Vegetable Tung Kee Style.
I especially liked the water spinach (tung choi) in the 鲜魷炒通菜.
The Fried Fish Meat with Corn Sauce (粟米斑塊 [汁另上]) is a childhood favourite. Here, they served the fried fish fillets separately from the corn sauce. The corn sauce is always great to eat with rice.
The Stir Fry Mixed Vegetable Tung Kee Style (新東記小炒皇) was also good to eat with rice since it was salty and flavourful.
The Season Vegetable with Salted Egg & Fresh Eggs in Consomme (金銀蛋浸時菜) was another comfort dish. The boiled veggies in this were a hit.
Glad we got to try this out-of-the-area place after our hike in Tung Chung! 🙂
